This, that

I watched the telly show Devs and it seems to be a standard “I created a monster” story. Very much in the form of “Frankenstein’s Monster” riven with romance and atmosphere. The music and sound are also striking and like nothing I have heard on telly before. Worth attention in these days of pestilence.

Stickers for luggage not yet purchased have been sourced. It was strange to discover that the people who offered the decals I found most beguiling also presented a sour politic. These lovely decals were depicting the various locations I have ended up, along with more memory for my slow computer. Moving forwards and back while staying still.

Superduplicate

The contents of your computer and phone are organised electricty and are fragile and prone to disappearence. One must always have a number of copies of files they wish to retain. In english this is called “backing up” which is too abstract and guilty of misdirection. Backing up your car is not even a little like backing up your files in your computer. Superduplicate is a far better, illustrative word. So be sure to superduplicate your device, lest the power goes out.

The Herd

There are five computers in our house and for the last few weeks there has been much fussing with these machines. Most of them need work. A small black laptop is running Haiku OS, which is a very cool and fast experience, except when using a browser. I love writing here, the slow browsers help with focus. The computer was designed for students and has a durable feel, clonky keys and the battery life is fine, though sometimes poorly reported by the OS. This computer is decorated with decals and is the one I am most happy with.

There is one under the stairs that should be a NAS but usually has one problem or another, mostly due to my ignorance. It needs to run software for sharing, do some superduplicating and be an archive. It will probably end up being a file server, it is currently running a nice simple operating system, I am wondering about getting a simpler one for it. I am having trouble running some favourite software on it, if this doesn’t work, it will get simpler.

There is a small one that used to live under the telly and offer shows to the telly, this spot has been replaced my a small single board computer for my daughter. The small one has been erased a number of times and now wait for the files to be restored and then will go into storage.

There is the main one, it has a dim display, slow HDD and feels generally turgid. I imagine upgrading the display and storage to be brighter and faster with a new, larger battery pack for long run times without the cable, but then. Replacing it with a desktop, would be better.

There is another small single board computer around and it is in a cool box and I am going make it into a super nerdy music player.

Gravity of Sleep Pulls Upward

I have been awake for many hours, as the dark was present, now as the sun arrives. I am home, downstairs, thinking of sleep, but I know on good authority, my ears, that the baby has taken my spot. I will stay down here, lurking in the puddle of yawns as to not cause further interruptions.

Soon the house will officially wake and then I will slump to the shores of sleep and enjoy the delta waves crashing on the fine sand of all the things I have forgotten.

The current events that surround us at this moment are significant and daunting. All to report is, we are taking care.

Tundra Opportunity

Plans for the Canadian North

Vertical subterranean farms, wind and seasonal solar power. Elegant geodesic construction would be advantageous in this environment due to lower material costs, voluminous structures that shed wind and save thermal energy. It needs to be acknowledged that different environments and climates require different construction solutions. The durable frame will need to shipped and assembled in-situ, panels should be constructed of local material with a binder from the south.

Motor Yachts

Recently it has come to my attention that to travel Canada via air, a dual citizen would require a valid Canadian Passport. This seems unduly onerous, so I began some light research into a sea crossing as this requirement is not placed on that form of entry.

There are few advertised UK to Canada passages, without first travelling to the United States. There is a single container ship voyage available from Liverpool to Halifax. This is not the great for small children.

Then naturally I began to research undertaking the voyage in a personal fashion and entered the world of sea craft. I quickly dispatched sails as they require a deeper knowledge than I suspect I would never be able to acquire. Motor yachts remain, passage-makers and ocean going, bluewater vessels. Two electric engines for redundancy, durable aluminum hulls, powered by electricity, charged by light and other systems.

But any serious contemplation of the sea, results in the conclusion that under the sea is the best place to travel. No other animal attempts a tiny island on the ocean and desires to use it to move from place to place on it. Nay, they dip under the waves and enjoy the static situation there and deal with the problems presented there.
